When you are driving in downtown LA on 2nd street, you might miss Badmaash which is somewhat hidden right next to the alleyway leading you to The Edison.  The always packed Badmaash combines Bollywood with a hipster vibe in this contemporary space serving gastropub fare.  You’ll see classic Bollywood posters on the walls along with contemporary art featuring Ghandi wearing sunglasses reminiscent of something Andy Warhol might have created.  There are two levels and I highly recommend being seated upstairs where the seating is less congested.

They serve a really fun menu featuring both traditional dishes and western blended dishes (BadmaashLA favorites) with fun names and a delicious variety of microbrews.  I was with a group so naturally they wanted to try the Badass Chicken Tikka which was average.  The Goan Pork & Yam Curry was delicious as advertised with a sweet and sour taste, but it was not spicy.  The Slow Cooked Beef Short Rib is not your average Indian delicacy and you could probably skip it as I found it to be a little too sweet.  Otherwise, the samosas and chili cheese naan were average.

Despite the food not being anything that is a must try, the cool ambience and vibe still makes this place worthwhile.  All dishes were served with traditional dining sets giving that authentic feel which most restaurants will not do.

ChaiTime: Bombay Cutting Chai has been my favorite chai of any place!  Served in an 8oz glass in a traditional milk container.  Strong hints of cardamon and cinnamon giving it a spicy kick!   Definitely worthwhile after a delicious meal at only $2.

If you are looking to have a fun night out in downtown, this would be a good place to start with your group!  Just make sure to make a reservation otherwise you’ll be waiting for a very long time.
